Seriously, there's nothing wrong with using the word oriental. People like to get REAL uppity on this site, so don't worry about it

Anonimo

thank you so much, but don’t worry, everthing is fine. The person who told me this wasn’t rude and I prefer to change a word on title rather than make someone feel uncomfortable. I appreciate your message too, it was kinf of you to worry about me <3

Eeeeh it depends, this is not really someone being oversensitive. Like, tumblr is full of non-native English speakers (both me and OP!) and that has to be considered when criticising the use of certain terms. We use ‘oriental’ in my language and it has no clear negative connotations. But for USians it will have a racist feel to it because it was and is too often paired with ‘exotic’ and ‘mysterious’ and contributing to a reductive fetishising of Asia... there’s a good reason people of Asian descent don’t like it.

The book ‘Orientalism’ talks about it, it’s not just a tumblr thing.

But since it’s absolutely possible that a tumblr poster has no idea a word may hurt, it’s more than ok to talk about these things. :)

the main thing is to talk with courtesy and be kind. My problem now is that I’m coloring Nadia’s dress and I’m going to die because of details.
