Can I just ask, when you first start drawing a new character from a show/film/game etc, how do you first go about capturing their appearance cause you really pick up such a good likeness of every character!!

Ask anything you want, I’ll try to do my best to answer you in the best way :)

In these case the first thing I do is to look for references, I have folders on my pc full of pictures from every angle of every characters. It means that I have so many photos of Baptiste, Mando and Joe Mazzello, Rami Malek…and I feel very bad, it’s like I’m some kind of stalker… but believe me when I say that you need every single pic to study how a face works. The second thing is to have fun. I love draw portraits, it’s the best thing in my job, I love discover all the major features in a face, drawing all the noses, all the cheekbones…

You have to watch videos too, for example Mando has very particular face and a wide range of expressions and you can’t see them just from pics or from the game.

Anyway I always choose characters I love and in the particular case of Lucas Baker he really has a face that fits my style! Same thing for Jason Brody….I know how to draw long boys, horses, flamingos and grayhounds. But I’ve had  trouble with Vaas, because he has a “square” face and I had to do a lot of practice….

So: look for references, look for videos, find the major features in a face, have fun and do a lot of practice. Draw, draw, draw. And love the character you’re drawing, I learned how to draw Vaas because I love that crazy bastard so much.

I hope I did well with your answer, if you need something else I’m here!
